“The Darling” by Anton Chekhov and “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant are very similar pieces of writing even though they were written fifteen years apart and in two separate countries (Russia and France respectively). Olga on one hand felt that her “best years were behind her” (298) after the tragic events of her life, and could not form opinions of her own without the presence of another. Mme. Loisel, even though she was not a happy person during the ten years of struggle, grew inside and learned to do things for herself instead of relying on others.
